Special TV Otter invites you to join us at the HCC Costume Ball on Oct 29th

You heard it here first: Saturday, October 29th will be the night of our highly-anticipated fifth annual HCC Halloween Costume Ball. HCC regulars know what that means: a night of fun and confusion with people who might be your friends but you're not entirely sure. Be there or be sad.

As for those of you who might be new to HCC or just very forgetful in general, it goes like this: That night, starting whenever the schedule page says it starts, you show up at HCC and cap using a new handle you've never used before. That's your costume. You can even make a handle graphic to go with it if you like, and most folks do. Then throughout the night, you try to figure out who the other cappers are just based on their caps, and they try to figure you out. When to unmask is up to you, but generally people reveal who they are right before they leave for the night. Toward the end of the night, usually during the last movie, we do a mass group unmasking of everyone who is still there.

And just to clear up some confusion from last year's Ball: You are not required to fess up just because someone guesses you correctly. You can play coy. Generally, I think it's more fun if people hold their beans until the end of the night, but it's entirely your choice. So come, cap, and find out how well you don't know your friends.

First, and you've probably already noticed this, but I've switched the caption-entry form so that it displays your handle graphic instead of your handle in plain text. If you need to change your handle because it's Halloween or because you're a lying bastard, just click your handle graphic and you'll get the text form back. Click the "Handle:" part to toggle back to your graphic if you changed your mind or you're just bored.

Secondly, you may or may not have been aware that you can right-click any screengrab on the site, choose "All Grabs" to see a page of all the screengrabs from that show/movie/commercial, and from there click and cap any of them you like. In the past, I've restricted the feature so you couldn't do this for the show that's currently playing in the regular feed, because it's more fun if we're all on the same pace and some fancyass isn't capping grabs from the end of the movie when you're still capping the opening credits. Anyway, it occurred to me this weekend that it would be more fun if instead of boarding up that feature entirely for the currently-running program, I could just set it to only display the grabs from the beginning of the show up to the currently-running grab. And so I have.
